Lucky Lartey Afro-Contemporary Dance Workshop

About the Workshop

An exploration of Afro-contemporary movement practices by Lucky Lartey, Dancer and Choreographer (Afro-contemporary and Traditional West African Dance).

Lucky will offer a unique exploration of his ideas and movement practices relating to Contemporary and Traditional African Dance, introducing dancers to African movement practices and then expanding these to further explore contemporary techniques and ideas. Participants will be exposed to African rhythm patterns and structures, and explore movement using words and sounds.

The two sessions are progressive i.e. the second workshop will build upon the skills and content taught in the first workshop. Students are encouraged to attend both workshops to enhance learning outcomes; however, interested participants may choose to register for single sessions. No prior African dance experience is required.

About Lucky’s movement practice

Lucky’s dance and choreographic practice looks for ways to negotiate what it means to draw on a rich history of traditional dance while innovating within a contemporary context. His methodology for developing dance work focuses on the collaboration between live percussion music and movement and is often informed by themes of social justice and the reinvigoration of past cultural forms such as cultural games and social activities.
